The Higher National qualifications in construction and the built environment are aimed at students wanting to continue their education through applied learning. Higher Nationals provide a wide-ranging study of the construction and the built environment sector and are designed for students who wish to pursue or advance their career in construction and the built environment. In addition to the knowledge, understanding and skills that underpin the study of the construction and the built environment sector, the Higher Nationals in construction and the built environment give students experience of the breadth and depth of the sector that will prepare them for further study or training. There has never been a better time to join the construction industry as we enter a huge exciting regeneration period for cities, railways and houses.

In the UK, the construction industry employs over two million people and our Higher National Certificate / Higher National Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment course matches the needs of the industry. Learning in our state-of-the-art workshops under the guidance of our expert tutors you will gain theoretical and practical knowledge to take you learning further. Our strong industry links also provide the opportunity for site visits and guest lectures so you are exposed to exciting industry advancements.

This course will prepare you in a technical, professional and management context to make an immediate contribution to the economy. You will develop a deeper understanding of the key features of construction management including resource management, finance, legal and environmental issues and their impact on successfully completing construction projects. Modules covered throughout this course include:

Year 1

Mandatory units:

  • Individual project (Pearson-set)
  • Construction technology
  • Science and materials
  • Construction practice and management

Optional units:

  • Tender and procurement
  • Alternative methods of construction
  • Environmental assessment and monitoring
  • Mathematics for construction.

Year 2

Specialist units:

  • Legal and statutory responsibilities in construction
  • Construction information (drawing, detailing, specification)
  • Surveying, measuring and setting out
  • Contracts and management
  • Project management
  • Management for complex buildings.

Year 3

In Year 3 you will choose various units, depending on the pathway chosen.

Hi-Vis and Work Safety Boots are required to undertake this course. All of our equipment is supplied by Baca.

Each year of the programme will include an externally set piece of work, the internally set units at mandatory, specialist and optional will be set and assessed internally through a range of mediums There is a range of assessment methods that can be utilised, such as:

● Presentations, written reports, accounts, surveys
● Log books, production diaries
● Role play
● Observations and reflections on practical tasks or performance
● Production of visual or audio materials, artefacts, products and specimens
● Peer and self-assessment
● Time constrained assessments

The level 5 Higher National Diploma allows students to specialise by committing to specific career paths. Upon completion of the course students may wish to progress onto degree-level study, for example the Moulton College BSc(Hons) Construction Management degree programme. In addition, the qualifications may provide links to industry-related and employer-supported apprenticeship schemes that can provide further opportunities for enhanced employability. The course provides opportunity to progress into employment within building services engineering technical routes, including management.

HNC - You must have successfully completed the BTEC Level 4 HNC in Construction and the Built Environment (Construction or Civil Engineering) All applicants will be interviewed over the telephone or in person to discuss their qualifications, experience and any other related issues.

We also welcome applicants who lack institutional qualifications. All such applicants will be interviewed and may be set an appropriate piece of work from which a decision will be made, taking into account their academic potential and relevant experience.

This course can be studied as either a Higher National Certificate (HNC) or a Higher National Diploma (HND).
